Even now, when you think of 🇺🇸Terence “Bud” Crawford (37-0-0, 28KO👊) past his nearly unmatched abilities, what comes to mind is that he is not the easiest person to approach, isn’t one that’s down for a long conversation, and can be stand-offish at times, which doesn’t necessarily have to be categorized as a bad thing. He simply enjoys the space that he operates in, and he only opens the ⛩️gates to those who he trust, and are close to him in his personal circle of supporters.
Considering that he is always locked in on his objective with a laser-like focus that you can visibly see when you peer into the eyes…coupled with spoken of traits earlier, and him having a naturally mean disposition when it’s time to get down to business, he has been feared by those who have been around him that doesn’t occupy that space that he covets, and that notion dates even back to his days as a youth.
Those stories are echoed of course by the coverage given over the years to Terence’s mother, 👩🏿Ms. Debbie Crawford, who raised her son to be as thick-skinned as you can be – with tactics deemed bordering on going over the edge…but it worked, as she knew what it was that her son could take, establishing the building blocks of accountability, work ethic, and toughness needed for Terence to survive in the world.
Now, also corroborating Terence Crawford’s mental approach to life is Shawn Porter (31-3-1, 17KO👊) himself, who Crawford is set to face on November 20th. Porter first met Crawford at the Olympic Training Center when they were attempting to make the ◯◯◯◯◯2008 Olympic Team. Crawford had the reputation of being a cold blooded quiet guy that every one else was scared to approach – which mirror’s exactly what we see now from the Omaha, Nebraska native. For television buffs out there, you could liken Crawford’s personality to Omar from 🎬🎥 “The Wire” – when he entered the room, you knew what time it was, he was going to get his…nothing much needed to be said, and he was all about his business, and that’s how Terence conducted himself.
Now Shawn Porter was the only one back then brazen enough to approach him, and being that Porter had a very similar mindset to his, they became friends outside the confines of boxing, and hung out often, played 🏀ball, and took up many activities. Shawn Porter, though he shared the same qualities of work ethic, tenacity and inner drive, where they differed from one another was that Shawn is extroverted, and enjoys being around the company of people, while Crawford is very protective of his personal space, and will fight for it if need be.
Long term friends being made in boxing are scarce, however they’ve been able to cultivate that friendship for over 13 years, even with the notion in the back of their head that they would possibly have to 🛣️cross paths in the future, especially the more they established themselves throughout the years. Porter has stated that he knew he’d end up facing Crawford indefinitely after Bud’s fight against 🇱🇹Egidijus Kavaliauskas, and Terence Crawford believed that Porter would be the only one to make the jump across the street of the ongoing promotional barrier in order to make the fight happen.
Porter may attempt to use his inside knowledge of Crawford to his advantage, being that he knows how his mind works, and what he hangs his 🎩hat on, but that is an interesting angle that we will touch upon later in this week. One things for sure…Porter knows that the intimidating Nebraska boxer with the steely gauze is not 💨smoke and 🪞mirrors at all – he is really that way when it’s go time, as he flips the switch when it’s time to get into the ring, and Porter will be expecting the mean version of his buddy to enter the ring, so Porter will be willing to meet 🔥🔥fire-with-fire to match his intensity. It is poetic that the only kid comfortable enough to step to Terence as a youth, is the very same guy that will look to give the feared champion the stern test that he was looking for❓
