The general plan 🇬🇧🇮🇪Michael Conlan (15-0-0, 7KO) was to campaign at a weight class that was more suitable for his power, and for him to take credible challenges along the way in the stacked Super-Bantamweight division. Conlan will be in very tough this upcoming Friday when he goes up against skilled, rugged former titlist 🇮🇪TJ Doheny (22-2-0, 16KO), who is looking to rebound after slipping from the pecking order in his most recent bout.
They have a common opponent, and that is 🇷🇴Ionut Baluta, who you may remember made it very tough on Conlan in his inaugural fight at the 122 lb. class (also Mick’s previous bout), with Baluta just barely dropping a Majority Decision decision on points, while Baluta prior to that fight scored the upset over Doheny in out in 🇦🇪Dubai, by Unanimous Decision.
Baluta’s emergence in the weight class has proven to be a litmus test for top talent, and for Conlan, back-to-back wins over the likes of Baluta and Doheny would take him a long, long way in terms of his world title aspirations.
The Irish fighter, who currently lives in Australia (that being Doheny) is 34 years old, and may be on his last legs of ranking among the top-tier contingent in the weight category, so he understands how important a win, and/or a good showing will be here, as he still has ambition to achieve more in the sport. They will fight at Falls Park, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is a Top-Rank main event, that will be broadcast on ESPN+ across the pond over in the United States.
