The main event wasn’t the only bout that brought a swell to the crowd – The opener to the main card fully established the tone for the rest of the night at the Dignity Health Sports Park. Rising Mayweather Promotions Super-Featherweight prospect 🇺🇸Xavier Martinez (17-0-0, 11KO) went toe to toe with battle-tested veteran 🇲🇽Juan Carlos Burgos (34-5-2, 21KO
) through 10 rounds of high octane action.
Juan Carlos Burgos gave as well as he could give, once again re-establishing why he constantly gets the call for the big assignments whenever there is an opening, and gained the respect of the crowd. While Burgos emptied his gas tank, the sharper Martinez was more economical with his output, and routinely timed Burgos coming in.
The fight reached a feverish pitch with both selling out to land their combinations, and the crowd ate it up, enjoying what was taking place. They fought tooth and nail until the final bell. Now of course Judging these days are routinely a problem when a prospect is in on the equation, and the same resulted here as all three judges had it 99-91, for a bout that felt closer to 97-93, or even 96-94. Nonetheless, a strong opener set the tone for the other two ensuing bouts to follow.
