The fight was very intriguing while it lasted, but at the end of the day, RING/WBA/WBC/WBO Super-Middleweight Champion of the World 👑🇲🇽Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (56-1-2, 38KO👊) staged a feverish storm in the 8th round that thwarted the strong mid-round effort by 🇬🇧Billy Joe Saunders (30-1-0, 14KO👊), with a shot that did serious damage to the right eye, forcing his corner to step in and call a stop to the action. Canelo now holds 4 of the 5 World Title belts in the division, and he made his plans public for what he wants next.

Coming out of the gate, Billy opted to stand with Canelo, interesting when you look at the range of tactics that the public had been debating he would use since hearing of this fight being inked. Saunders jab was his main focus, splitting the guard down the middle, and using it as a range measure, while Canelo spent his time applying mental pressure by getting in, and cutting the large ring off that Saunders & co clamored for, and Canelo landed a couple of heavy shovel hooks to the body, while Billy’s back was touching the ropes.

COLA 1

Canelo asserted his positioning in the second round, stepping up the effective pressure, and landed a few stiff right hands that packed serious thud behind them, and though they didn’t hurt Saunders, they certainly got his attention, as that was the first time he tasted the power of Canelo, and the heat that he is capable of bringing.

A double right hook to the body, and to the head made its mark in what was a nip and tuck 3rd round up until then, and Canelo effectively pop-shotted him upstairs, as he developed a rhythm, and cadence for the way in which Billy Joe operates, which at the time, spelled out a potential doomsday.

COLA 2

Canelo in round 4 had Billy worried about the counter right hand over the top, so Billy utilized the high guard, so Canelo kept feinting upstairs to get Saunders to shell up, and often fired left hooks, and crosses to the midsection. Whenever he would get in close enough, Canelo ripped in some nasty uppercuts right to the button that effected Saunders – something he practiced often in the gym, getting ready for this particular assignment.

Saunders in round 5 utilized every portion of the ring, looking to find ways to tame the bull. He landed a sharp double-jab to get some respect from the redhead on pursuit. Billy whenever he gets comfortable drops his hands, and loosens up. He did just that, and landed some quality, sneaky right hands that caught the eye of many of the 73,000 fans in attendance at the 🏟️AT&T Center in Arlington, Texas.

Saunders confidence was growing by round 6, and a confused, nervous energy began to sound off in the crowd, as the English man had a strong start to the round, throwing, and landing from unorthodox angles, and making Canelo miss often, something you don’t typically see.

Round 7, Canelo did a better job than he did in previous rounds, in particular early on, though Saunders continued displaying his craft in mid distance, with his hands down, and finding cracks here n there to connect. Round 8, Canelo landed a mammoth uppercut to the mid section that buckled Billy. Canelo, sensing the moment, rallied up the fans in putting his hands up, and feverishly walked down Saunders, looking to inflict pain with the big left hook. He landed a sweeping right uppercut at the end of the round that Billy ducked down into, which appeared to crack the Brit’s 👁️right orbital bone.

DAMNMN

Now, looking deep into the Billy Joe Saunders, there was heavy cold compress pressure being applied to the heavy swelling on the right eye of Saunders, and we don’t know exactly what happened in the corner during live time, but Billy never left his stool, and the fight was waived off by Referee 🕴️Marc Calo-Oy, thus Canelo getting the victory, and being serenaded by his raucous fans in attendance. Canelo now sits at the top, and retains his position as the Super-Middleweight Champion of the World, holding the RING, WBA, WBC, and now WBO Super-Middleweight Titles. Saunders, losing his first pro fight, didn’t stick around for an interview, and he was transported to a local Medical Facility for observation.

WHAT LOOMS NEXT FOR THE ACCLAIMED, DECORATED 168 LB. WORLD CHAMPION?

Canelo over the last 2 years hasn’t been secretive about his ambitions to become Mexico’s first Undisputed World Champion in quite some time. Holding the RING, WBA, WBC, WBO Titles, the logical next step would be for him to look at skilled marksman 🇺🇸Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (21-0-0, 12KO👊), who has a firm grip on the red IBF Super-Middleweight World Title, and during the 🎙️post-fight interview, he made those ambitions public for the world to hear. Given that both have been open to fighting each other on the right terms, it seems more than likely that we will get that bout sometime in the backend of 🗓️2021.
