Boxing fans, the ESPN commentary crew, and Top Rank headman Bob Arum were all left astonished at the incompetence displayed Saturday night during the Super-Flyweight title rematch between Joshua Franco and Andrew Moloney.
A jab delivered in the first round by Moloney in the first round had completely shut Franco’s eye by the second round. However what should have been ruled a TKO win for Moloney was instead called a no contest due to referee Russell Mora ruling that an accidental headbutt had caused the swelling to Franco’s eye.
The poor call by Mora should have easily been overruled with the instant replay available ringside, but instead we were treated to a nearly half hour review by referee Robert Byrd and Bob Bennett of the Nevada Athletic Commission that inexplicably let the call stand. So 🇦🇺Moloney (21-1-0, 14KO) is left to figure out when he can get another crack at the title that should be his right now while 🇺🇸Franco (17-1-2, 8KO) keeps the WBA World Super-Flyweight title by way of official ineptitude.
Chicago Bantamweight 🇺🇸Joshua Greer (22-2-2, 12KO) was unable to get back in the win column as he fought to a majority draw verdict in his eight round bout with Puerto Rico’s 🇵🇷Edwin Rodriguez (11-5-2, 5KO). Max Deluca and John Mckaie scored it a 76-76 draw, while Adalaide Byrd had it 77-75 for Rodriguez.
🇺🇸Tyler Howard ( 19-0-0, 11KO) of Crossville, Tennessee, won a eight unanimous decision (77-74, 76-74, 77-73) over Tuscaloosa, Alabama native 🇺🇸Keandre Leatherwood (22-8-1, 13KO).
Fontana, California Lightweight 🇺🇸Raymond Muratalla (11-0-0, 9KO) stopped Ecuador’s 🇪🇨Luis Porozo (15-5-0, 8KO) in the third round of a scheduled six.
Featherweight prospect 🇺🇸Duke Ragan (3-0-0, 1KO) of Cincinnati, Ohio, took a four round unanimous decision over 🇺🇸Sebastian Gutierrez (1-1-0, 1KO) of Oxnard, California.
Bantamweight 🇦🇺Vegas Larfield (2-0-0, 2KO) of Queensland, Australia, picked up the second win of his career, stopping Mexico’s 🇲🇽Juan Alberto Flores (2-1-1, 0KO) in the third round of a scheduled four.
