An intriguing battle will take place from “The Land Down Under” on Wednesday as world prospect & regional title holder 🇦🇺Tim Tszyu (IBF Australian Super-Welterweight) will be out to prove that he is a legit force to be dealt with in the Super-Welterweight division. Tszyu will be taking on tough veteran and former WBO Welterweight Champion 🇦🇺Jeff “The Hornet” Horn in a 10 round battle from Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville, Australia.
The 25 year old Tszyu (15-0-0, 11KO) has delivered some solid performances so far in his career, but as is often the case the level of opposition is in question. How tough a fighter has been challenged is a question that weighs even heavier on a fighter like Tim Tszyu who is following in the footsteps of his father Kostya, a former Undisputed Junior-Welterweight Champion. Is the hype real, or is this another case of elevation by name?
The hype and rising star power in Australia around Tszyu doesn’t phase Jeff Horn (20-2-1, 13KO). The 32 year old Horn is a tough, rugged, awkward fighter, who has never been afraid to make things ugly in the ring. As is well documented his biggest win came when he obtained to WBO title in a highly disputed win over Manny Pacquiao in his hometown of Brisbane in 2017. Since that life changing victory Horn has gone 3-2 in the ring, both losses coming by TKO to Terence Crawford in 2018 and Michael Zerafa in 2019.
Horn last fought in 2019, getting payback on Zerafa and doesn’t want to be viewed as a veteran stepping stone for Tszyu’s career. Horn finds himself slotted at #5 in the WBO, while Tszyu comes in at #12 in the WBC and #6 in the IBF and #9 WBO.
Fighting Words: “It’s a fight; we’re not ballerinas in there. He’s going to be punching me, I’m going to be punching him of course, he’s not going to be patting my head. Sometimes you want to get into a war … if it gets dirty it gets dirty, I can bang it out.”
“They’re very serious and very cocky in the way that they think that they’re going to win this fight nice and easy, but he has never fought the opposition I have. He’s got relatively little experience in that manner, and the only reason this fight has been made is because his last name is Tszyu … His father was an absolute legend. We wouldn’t be fighting him if his last name wasn’t his dad’s name.
“If he was Tim Smith, he wouldn’t be getting this far because I’d be looking at bigger and better things. The Tszyu name is red hot. His far is an absolute legend, and that’s exactly why this fight is happening.”
Place Your Bets: Tszyu is the betting favorite at -235 which surprises Horn who comes in at +185. Horn feels his experience should carry much more weight in the odds because he has owned the belts Tszyu has plus a world title.
