It’s the third week of Matchroom Boxing’s Fight Camp, and although there have been some entertaining scraps on the previous cards, this week gives us a quality Heavyweight clash that should be explosive. Veteran Heavyweight world contender 🇯🇲🇬🇧Dillian “The Body Snatcher” Whyte (27-1-0, 18KO) has his status as WBC mandatory at stake , and a win here cements him a shot at the belt.
The quick witted, British slugger with a crushing left hook has been mandatory for over 1000 days now, but this, yes THIS, is the fight that guarantees he will have his shot at the winner of Fury vs Wilder which should be taking place this winter.
Standing in his way is Russia’s 🥇🇷🇺Alexander “Sasha” Povetkin (35-2-1, 24KO). At 40, Povetkin is more than likely looking at his final opportunity at championship hardware. Povetkin has previously held the WBA version of the title and has come up short in title bouts against Wladimir Klitschko (L, UD in 2013) and Anthony Joshua (L, TKO 7, 2018).
At this point both fighters seem meant for one another as they each bring a reputation for coming to fight when they take to the ring, but they are also well documented for dirty pool, as both have been punished for doping in the past.
Looking at the current streaks of these two, Whyte has won his last three bouts, delivering a devastating knockout out on longtime rival Dereck Chisora, then taking decisions over Oscar Rivas and Mariusz Wach. As for Povetkin, he has split his most recent bouts three ways with a loss against Anthony Joshua, decision win over Hughie Fury, and a draw with Michael Hunter.
Whyte vs Povetkin will broadcast from the Matchroom Fight Camp in Brentwood, UK on Saturday at 2pm ET/11am PT on DAZN.
