It’s week 2 of the Matchroom Boxing Fight Camp Series, and a bit of history will be made Friday as the first all British women’s title fight headlines the card.
Fast rising, undefeated Super-Featherweight 🇬🇧Terri Harper (10-0-0, 5KO) defends her WBC and IBO world title belts against 🇬🇧Natasha Jonas (9-1-0, 7KO) in the ten round affair from Brentwood, United Kingdom.
The 23 year old Harper has been picking up steam since her impressive stoppage of Nozipho Bell to win the vacant IBO Super Featherweight belt in 2019. Harper followed that win up later in the year with a successful defense, a ten round unanimous decision over Viviane Obenauf. Most recently, this past February, Harper claimed the WBC title after beating Eva Wahlstrom.
Jonas had a strong amateur career and represented Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics, losing in the quarter finals to Ireland’s Katie Taylor, who would go on to claim the gold medal. None of the nine victories on her record do much to impress the boxing fans eye, with only one coming against an above .500 opponent. The lone loss on her resume came as a result of a fourth round stoppage against common opponent with Harper, Obenauf in 2018.
Jonas knows she is a heavy underdog entering this matchup, but she has stood firm that Harper’s youth will be her achilles heel when they take the ring. She has stated that Harper’s guarantees of stopping her shows naivete and will cause overeagnerness in the fight leading to mistakes that Jonas will be able to exploit.
Harper has said that although Jonas had an elite amateur career, her work as a professional has been unimpressive and the pressure is on for her to prove she belongs at this level. She believes the advantages she holds in age, stamina and strength will be too much for Jonas and earn her a stoppage victory.
The two were set to square off before the coronavirus pandemic took hold and forced a delay.
