The Garcia/Reynoso Connection is Clicking on All Cylinders

By Jon Uddin

The rise of 21 year old Lightweight star 🇺🇸Ryan Garcia (20-0-0, 17KO) continues after bringing the crowd to their feet with a jaw dropping first round knockout of 🇳🇮Francisco Fonseca (25-3-2, 19KO) Friday night in Anaheim, California.

It didn’t take Garcia long to lock in on his target as he landed a left hook behind the ear of Fonseca that put the 25 year old Nicaraguan on his back staring straight up into the lights. The shot was fast, precise and when it hit Garcia walked away knowing his work was done just 1:20 into the first round, a knockout of the year candidate in hand.

So that now makes the young Lightweight from Victorville, California 4-0 under trainer Eddy Reynoso, with each win coming by way of knockout. Fonseca is a respectable ring veteran that has been in with the likes of Tevin Farmer and Gervonta Davis, but Garcia entered the matchup a heavy betting favorite as everyone recognized the advantages he held in size, strength and hand speed. All three played a direct factor in ending Fonseca’s night early, and as Garcia continues his work under Reynoso, the growth in ring presence and IQ can be seen in each outing.

There will still be many who have a sour taste in their mouth about “KingRy” and the way he was initially marketed when he came on the scene. The teen heartthrob, Instagram star play was the exact opposite of what the majority of hardcore boxing fans, who connect with the fighters that build themselves up from a hard luck life, are looking for. Garcia could win his final detractors over before long as his linking with Reynoso, and consistent improvement are evidence of his desire to maximize his abilities and become the best fighter possible.

The next step in Garcia’s development is being targeted for this July in a matchup with the battle tested former three-division Champion Jorge Linares. Linares delivered a fourth round knockout on Carlos Morales in the co-main event of the card. Reynoso has said on multiple occasions that he is gauging where Garcia is and what he is ready for, so one can only assume if this fight is made it’s with the green light from the head trainer.

The building of the undefeated Lightweight continues, and it appears to be headed for the biggest test of his young career this summer.
