Opportunity is knocking once again for Mexican Flyweight 🇲🇽Julio Cesar Martinez, and he wants to bring in the new year with a world title.
It was apparent to most that watched his August 31st fight at the O2 Arena, that Martinez (14-1-0, 11KO) was a problem for WBC Flyweight champion Charlie Edwards. Actually he was a big problem. Martinez had Edwards troubled from the start, and in the third round his attack put Edwards down. Unfortunately, for Martinez, he delivered a body shot to Edwards while he was on the canvas and even though the ten count was delivered by the referee the win for Martinez was overturned before they even exited the ring.
Now the 24 year old Martinez (ranked #4 flyweight by me, #3 by Tré Berry III) will have his second crack at the WBC prize and opposing him with title aspirations of his own on Saturday will be 🇳🇮Cristofer Rosales (29-4-0, 20KO). Rosales is a 25 year old native of Nicaragua has faced some of the best in the flyweight division, including Edwards in 2018, Andrew Selby in 2017 and Khalid Yafai in 2015, falling by fairly decisive margins on the scorecards in each bout.
Even with the No Contest from the Edwards fight it’s been a big year overall for Martinez. He handed Andrew Selby his first loss in March, delivering a fifth round knockout in Mexico putting him in position for his shot at the flyweight title. Martinez’s performances this year and Edwards move up, has him viewed among the top dogs of the divsion, so winning the WBC title will cement his status heading into 2020. The fight will serve as the undercard to the super middleweight bout between Daniel Jacobs and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
