Undefeated Welterweight prospect 🇺🇸Vergil Ortiz Jr. (14-0-0, 14KO) looks to close out the year strong as he takes on 🇺🇸Brad Solomon (28-1-0, 9KO) in a 12 round headliner Friday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.
While highly touted Lightweight prospect Ryan Garcia is currently viewed as the future golden goose over at Golden Boy, Ortiz who carries a 100% knockout rate, has established himself as a fan favorite and strong draw in his own right. In his last outing back in August, the 21 year old packed the Verizon Theatre in his hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas against the gritty Antonio Orozco. Ortiz picked up a sixth round TKO in the bout, becoming the first fighter to stop the 31 year old Orozco in his 11 year career. Orozco became the third fighter to fall to Ortiz this year and the second veteran to succumb to the 21 year old’s power as a battle tested but extremely faded Mauricio Herrera also went down in just three rounds this past May.
Ortiz is on a roll, and he wants to take every ounce of momentum he currently possesses and turn it into a big year in 2020. He doesn’t hesitate to state that his goal in the next year is to go head to head with the next tier of welterweights and head trainer Robert Garcia feels he right on track to do just that.
Until then the business at hand awaits Friday with 36 year old Brad Solomon. The Lafayette, Louisiana native hasn’t been the most active fighter in the past few years as his last fight came over a year and a half ago in 2018 when he took a 10 round split decision over Ireland’s Paddy Gallagher. Overall ,Solomon has gone 2-0 since his 2016 split decision loss against Konstantin Ponomarev in a toe to toe battle that stands as the lone loss on his record. Up to this point in his career, Solomon has proved to be durable as he has never been stopped or dropped in the ring. We will soon see if Ortiz, with his power and 15 year age advantage, will change that.
