Saturday at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio,California, WBA World Super-Featherweight Champion 🇺🇸Andrew Cancio (21-4-2, 16KO👊) makes the second defense of his title in a rematch with 🇳🇮Rene Alvarado (31-8-0, 20KO👊). The two squared off back in 2015 where Cancio won by knockout in the eighth round.
It’s been a year of rematches for “El Chango” as he went into an immediate rematch with Alberto Machado, the man who he won the belt from, proving his upset was no fluke stopping him a second time in June. If things go as planned for Cancio he will have the same result against Alvarado Saturday night and end his year with a 3-0 record. The 31 year old, Blythe, California native has hopes for a big year in 2020 that will allow him to move on from his daily grind as a gas company worker, to 100% focus as a full time fighter.
Rene Alvarado’s last fight took place in April where the 30 year old Nicaraguan took a technical decision over fellow countryman Eusebio Osejo in a eight round bout in his hometown. Ranked as the top challenger by the WBA, Alvarado is a veteran of the ring that has spent the majority of his time as a journeyman but now finds himself with his first shot at at world title.
