Prospect Watch: Ryan Garcia Faces Romero Duno

The molding of Lightweight prospect 🇺🇸Ryan Garcia (18-0-0, 15KO👊) continues under the counsel of Trainer Eddy Reynoso this weekend in Las Vegas. This is the third consecutive fight that Reynoso, who also serves as head man for Canelo Alvarez, will man the corner for Garcia since taking the reigns in October of 2018, and so far they have produced back to back knockout wins together.

The last glimpse into Garcia’s progression came in March when he made quick work of Puerto Rico’s Jose Lopez in the second round. As a prospect it’s unusual that this has been the one and only time Garcia has fought this year, but it’s not all on him as his last fight was cancelled due to his opponents legal issues.

The next man on the docket is 🇵🇭Romero Duno (21-1-0, 16KO👊) who Garcia will face as the co-main event to the WBO Light Heavyweight title fight between Canelo Alvarez and Sergey Kovalev at the MGM Grand Arena. Ironically Duno was ready to fill in when Garcia’s last bout fell through, but it didn’t happen due to disputes between Garcia’s team and the promoters at Golden Boy. The 24 year old Filipino brings a relentless, or as his ring moniker will tell you “Ruthless” style, and packs plenty of punch. He is being billed as the first fighter that can really give people a chance to see how Garcia, 21, handles himself when facing some legitimate push back.

Fair enough that Duno has the pop to get his opponents respect, and his pressure style has made for a long night against previous opposition, but now he is up against more size, length and punching power himself in Garcia. Duno is not hard to hit and he often puts himself out of position and off balance with wild punches and throwing shots out of range in attempts to deliver his overhand right and uppercuts.

It’s been officially a year since the Garcia-Reynoso connection was created. Their third fight together coming off seven months of work between the last fight, could really show what Reynoso has been cleaning up in his pupil. Ryan Garcia vs Romero Duno will stream live on DAZN Saturday at 9pm ET/6pm PT.
