The wait is finally over, as Cruiserweight legend & current Lineal Champion ♛🥇🇺🇦Oleksandr Usyk (16-0-0, 12KO👊) returns after an 11 month hiatus, to finally make his Heavyweight debut to test the waters and get his feet wet for the journey he is looking to travel. He will have a solid opponent in front of him to serve as a litmus test to where Usyk stands as of today when he faces ranked undefeated Heavyweight 🇳🇱Tyrone Spong (14-0-0, 13KO) of the Netherlands, who is ranked #6 by the WBO sanctioning body.
Usyk originally had plans to debut at Heavyweight back on May 25th against 🇫🇷Carlos Takam, but a bicep injury delayed his plans, and had to take time off to heal up, and search for a new opponent as time passed. Perhaps a blessing in disguise, this also gave Usyk more time to get his body acclimated towards getting used to carrying extra weight as he rounded into shape upon starting his training camp. Spong is 34 years of age, and was an acclaimed kick-boxer before venturing off to boxing. Though that was his best sport, he has done pretty well for himself in the Heavyweight ranks, and carries a host of combat experience as a natural athlete. Much like Takam, Spong possesses a good deal of power, and should serve as a respectable test for Usyk who is looking to spread his wings in the new division and get used to the power that is to come from future opponents.
Though not official of course, this move up in weight for the brilliant Ukrainian perhaps marks the end of a historic Cruiserweight run, as he ran through the likes of 🇵🇱Krzysztof Glowacki, 🇱🇻Mairis Breidis, 🇺🇸Michael Hunter, 🇷🇺Murat Gassiev, 🇩🇪Marco Huck & 🇬🇧Tony Bellew (fighting all of those fighters on their own home turf) en route to becoming just the 3rd Undisputed Cruiserweight Champion of all time, and the first to do so in the 4 belt era by hoisting the WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO & ♛RING World Titles. He was also the only Undisputed Cruiserweight World Champion in boxing history to ever defend his World Titles, as he did so by taking on the dangerous Tony Bellew and retiring him from the sport of boxing.
With history under his lineage, and unrivaled skill from the contingent of big men moonlighting around the ⚖️200 lb weight limit and beyond, Usyk is looking to add a brand new element to a Heavyweight division who has some interesting individual components, that could possibly serve as great challenges for Usyk, granted if he takes care of his responsibilities, and defeating Spong impressively would put him in a positive direction towards that. Of course, one thing at a time has to be taken care of, and he is itching to put the gloves on and get back to action. Spong is looking to make an immediate splash against an elite P4P talent, so we will ultimately see how it will go down on Saturday, October 12th. This fight will be fought at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois, you you can catch it on DAZN live streaming app, tune in to see this main event and an interesting undercard.
