Undefeated Lightweight 🇺🇸Devin Haney (22-0-0, 14KO) fights for the third time this year when he takes on fellow unbeaten Lightweight 🇷🇺Zaur Abdullaev (11-0-0, 7KO) as the main event Friday night from The Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The 20 year old Haney is 2-0 on the year and delivered a “2019 Knockout of the Year” candidate in his last outing against Antonio Moran in his DAZN debut. At the time it was thought his fight with Moran was a WBC eliminator to face the winner of the Vasiliy Lomachenko and Luke Campbell fight, but it’s now been determined Lomachenko won’t fight again in 2019 and his first fight in 2020 will be a unification bout with the winner of the Richard Commey/Teofimo Lopez IBF title bout in December.
So with that being the case, the WBC has agreed to put the interim title on the line for Haney-Abdullaev as well as being a WBC final eliminator for Vasiliy Lomachenko. Even with Top Rank making the statement that Lomachenko is done for the year, Haney is hoping that something can be done to make a fight between him and the RING/WBA/WBC/WBO World hampion happen before the end of 2019.
All these plans will mean nothing if Haney’s opponent Friday night spoils the party. Zaur Abdullaev will be making his first trip outside of his home of Russia in his short career, which began in March of 2017.
Abdullaev’s manager says that it’s too early for Team Haney to make big plans for the future. He has expressed a lot of confidence in his fighter’s abilities and chances of pulling what would be a huge upset Friday night.
Haney vs Abdullaev will be shown on DAZN Friday night with the card starting at 7pm ET/4pm PT.
