Irish Featherweight 🥉🇮🇪Michael Conlan (12-0-0, 7 KO) remains perfect after getting the stoppage in his Belfast homecoming against 🇦🇷Diego Alberto Ruiz (21-3-0, 10 KO) Saturday. Conlan won every round and put Ruiz down with body shots in the ninth round, and would stop him not long after the action started back up.
There was little expectation that Ruiz would provide much resistance in this matchup after it was announced he would be stepping in for Conlan’s original opponent, 🇷🇺Vladimir Nikitin, who Conlan has had a long standing vendetta against since getting the short end of the stick in a highly controversial decision in the 2016 Olympics.
Conlan can’t control his opponents injuries, and there’s no way of knowing if Nikitin would have fared any better than Ruiz did Saturday, but the grudge match factored in would have made it more substantial. Conlan got the expected result Saturday, but fans have been waiting for the bar to be raised a few notches for him at this point. Hopefully that is what we will see in his next fight.
