Saturday night we have a Super-Lightweight unification clash between WBC Titlist 🇺🇸Jose Ramirez (24-0-0, 16KO) and WBO Titlist 🇺🇸Maurice Hooker (26-0-3, 17KO) at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.
This will be the third title defense for the Dallas native Hooker since he made the journey to Manchester to take the WBO World Title from Terry Flanagan in June of 2018. Later that November, Hooker made the first defense of his belt in Oklahoma, as he got up from a knockdown in the second round to bounce back and stop hometown hero Alex Saucedo in the seventh.
The second defense for “Mighty Mo” was held in New York this past March where he handled Brooklyn’s Mikkel Les Pierre fairly easy, winning by a unanimous decision, creating the opportunity that he holds now with the hometown defense.
The road to unification for Jose Ramirez began in March of 2018, with his unanimous decision win over Amir Imam for the vacant WBC Super Lightweight Title in a tough action bout at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. That was followed up by his first title defense in another terrific fight with Antonio Orozco which although was filled with fire from both men, Ramirez clearly took on all three judges cards.
The second title defense for Ramirez came this past February with less fireworks but plenty of resistance from his opponent Jose Zepeda. The southpaw Zepeda made it rough for Ramirez, but the champion was able to squeak out a majority decision on the cards.
This is a great matchup between who I view as the number 3 and 4 guys at 140 right now behind Josh Taylor and Regis Prograis. It’s a true 50/50 fight in my eyes that has the potential to break out into a war by the mid rounds. The stakes are high and both men have shown that they can answer the call when it’s time to dig deep and go toe to toe get the win. As of now the bookmakers favor Ramirez (-135) to Hooker (+105).
Hooker vs Ramirez will be on DAZN Saturday at 9pm ET/6pm PT.
