Ugas Shuts out Figueroa, Wins WBC Welterweight Title Eliminator

What was looked at as an interesting match-up of contenders resulted in a complete wipe out. Olympic Bronze-Medalist and current top Welterweight contender 🥉🇨🇺Yordenis Ugas (24-4-0, 11KO) thoroughly dismantled undefeated pressure fighter 🇺🇸Omar Figueroa Jr. (28-1-1, 19KO) through 12 rounds to give Figueroa the first loss of his professional career on the undercard of Thurman vs. Pacquiao.

Ugas natural style is one where he boxes from the outside, popshots, counters and pivots, very traditional to the “Cuban school of boxing” that has become the norm for many Cuban standouts who come up through their amateur system. What makes Ugas one of the better Welterweights in the world is that he can switch up his game plan at will in fighting various styles, and he did just that in this fight. Omar Figueroa despite putting together an impressive campaign with wins over some very capable contenders and former Champions, only has one dimension to his arsenal as a linear come forward pressure fighter.
.
Ugas and legendary Cuban Trainer 🗣️Ismael Salas game plan coming in was for Ugas to stay inside and take that dimension away from Figueroa, and was very successful in doing so. Ugas is physically a very strong Welterweight, knows how to throw his size around, and uses his leverage to land his power shots on the inside, and he was catching Figueroa all night. He also got away with constantly pushing Figueroa off due to the Referee’s reluctance to call it out, putting Omar in punching range for Ugas to fire his wide left hook and rangy right hand that kept finding home. As Figueroa was getting thoroughly outpointed, and outworked, he showed zero ability in being able to switch up and do something different, and his corner did a very poor job in giving him the right type of advice to counter what it was Ugas was doing. Yordenis had a point taken away for excessive holding in the fight, but it was all academic in what was a relatively easy win for him, winning all 12 rounds on all scorecards. Ugas looks like a top-6 or 7 Welterweight in the world from where we stand, and now that he won his Title Eliminator, he will be keeping a close eye on the upcoming PPV fight between 🇺🇸Errol Spence Jr. and 🇺🇸Shawn Porter, who will have that WBC belt that Ugas is coveting, in addition to the IBF Welterweight Title.
