Saturday night at Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California, former two division Champion Devon Alexander (27-5-1, 14KO) will take on former Super Lightweight contender Ivan Redkach (22-4-1, 17KO) in a 10 round welterweight bout that is nothing short of a must win for both men.
The fan friendly, action first Redkach, 33, will be at 147 for the first time, and with a record of 3-3-1 in his last 7 fights, is fully aware that his career is at stake at this point. He has won his last two bouts, but the wins came in 8 rounders against opposition that doesn’t move the meter.
Redkach will have future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley in his corner and has been been putting in work with two of Alexander’s most recent opponents, Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz. Alexander dropped a split decision to Berto and fought to a draw against Ortiz.
Alexander, now 32, is looking to prove that he still has what it takes to make some noise in a division that is ripe with young talent like Terence Crawford, Errol Spence, Keith Thurman and a still formidable Hall of Famer in 40 year old Manny Pacquaio.
The St. Louis southpaw is 1-1-1 in his last 3 fights, but his biggest battles came outside of the ring as he was forced to hang up the gloves between 2015 and 2017 while recovering from an addiction to painkillers. To get back on track Alexander has also enlisted the services of a future Hall of Famer in Roy Jones Jr. who will serve as his trainer. Alexander has credited Jones for helping him find both a physical and mental balance while training and also having fun in the fight game again.
The long game in the current 147 landscape will be a tough road for both Alexander and Redkach but there is plenty at stake for both men in this one, and the matchup should provide an entertaining fight at the least.
Devon Alexander vs Ivan Redkach will be shown Saturday at 8pm et/5pm pt on FS1.
