It’s a beautiful thing whenever we get Undisputed World Title Fights, especially with the fracturing of Titles, and this one carries plenty of weight, as there is only currently 2 Undisputed Champions on the women’s side. Ireland-great Gold-Medalist & WBA/WBO/IBF Lightweight Women’s Champion of the World ‘Irish’ Katie Taylor (13-0-0, 6KO) comes to the Garden (Madison Square Garden that is) to continue her streak of outstanding personal performances, and in pursuit to nab all the Lightweight Title Belts, against long-reigning Belgium WBC Lightweight Women’s World Champion Delfine Persoon (43-1-0, 18KO) for a claim at Lightweight & Women’s Boxing Supremacy.
Persoon has been the WBC Champion of the World for the last few years dating back to 2014, where she had defended the green strap 9 times, and hasn’t particularly come close to losing during her stint as a Champion. The 34 year old would like nothing more than to put an exclamation to her long career by defeating the terror that will accompanying her inside the ring on June 1st. As for Katie Taylor, she is outstanding in every facet of the sport, and has the right deadpan personality & temperament for a fighter whose destiny and career aspirations at this point are fully intertwined with one another, who is also trying to accomplish more than becoming an Undisputed Champion. Katie wants to be the face of Women’s boxing, and she is right in that mix with her other elite contemporaries. Many pundits can make the case that she might already be the best all-around P4P boxer on her side of the sport, and I may be in agreement with that growing assessment. For her to become that recognizable face, she has a golden opportunity fighting this mega-fight on Anthony Joshua’s undercard, which will generate a mass amount of viewers to this fight being discussed here. If Katie shows out the way she is accustomed to, she could achieve a multitude of dreams in a single night. This will be the co-headliner to the aforementioned Anthony Joshua/Andy Ruiz fight card, which will be shown on the DAZN app. Tune in on Saturday, June 1st.
