A full circle moment, in honor of Memorial weekend, former Marine Corp Sergeant Jamel ‘Semper Fi’ Herring (20-2-0, 10KO) established full control tonight in his Title fight against now-former Titlist Masayuki Ito (25-2-1, 13KO), getting the nod from the judges to secure the UNANIMOUS DECISION victory to become the new WBO Super-Featherweight Champion of the world.
Herring stood tall and used his range, an effective snap jab and subtle defense to offset the one-dimensional Japanese fighters offense, taking away that one dimension by not giving Ito any glaring holes to target with his vaunted right hand. Herring kept turning him all day with his side-to-side foot movement, giving Masayuki different looks, and Ito wasn’t well-equipped enough to adapt, or readjust to the game-plan orchestrated against him. A calm seemed to come to Herring when “Unanimous Decision” was uttered by Ring-Announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr., and the first scorecard revealed was wide, which was an indication that he was about to be rewarded for what he worked hard for.
This was Ito’s first fight under the Top-Rank banner, and while he’ll prove his worth as an entertaining fighter, there is a lot that he needs to work on. Fighting among the Championship level, he will have to develop his left hook further, work on his footwork, and hone in on different methods of attack so that he can compete at this level, to keep the interest up of those who are watching. As for Herring, this was his first fight for a World Title, and he delivered big time, well done.
