Gary Russell Returns to the Ring

For what will be the co-headliner to the Wilder/Breazeale Showtime card that is happening in Brooklyn, NY at the Barclay’s Center, WBC Featherweight World Champion ‘Mr.’ Gary Russell Jr. (29-1-0, 17KO) finally returns from his 364 day hiatus to fight #3 WBC contender Kiko Martinez (39-8-2, 28KO) of Spain.
Russell is a bonafide World Class fighter, who has thee speediest hands in all of boxing, but he’s a confusing case…and at times, downright frustrating. At this point in his career, he only fights once per year, which doesn’t do much for his stock, nor does it keep his name in circulation the way that it should when discussing some of the best fighters out there. In his defense, he is one of the most heavily avoided fighters in boxing, and understandably so. From another point of view however, for someone who is having difficulty in securing big fights, he should stay active by taking on mid level fights just to give a reminder to people of how good he is, and to keep sharp while he’s trying to get another big time opponent in the ring with him.
For Kiko Martinez, he has been around for a while, and has fought many of the other top dogs still reigning supreme at the top of the division. Though he has fallen short in those fights, he tends to give a pretty good account of himself, and now on Saturday he will face arguably the most talented of the bunch, with an opportunity to stick the win that he’s been trying to secure. Tune into Showtime on Saturday, live coverage begins at 8 P.M. EST.
