A match-up we’ve been looking forward to big time, undefeated WBO Light-Heavyweight Champion Eleider ‘Storm’ Alvarez (24-0-0, 12KO) gives another opportunity to the man whom he took the world title from in now-former Champion Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev (32-3-1, 28KO).
The first fight was a thriller, with Kovalev effectively establishing his imprint on the outside, and Eleider working his way inside Kov’s reach, and showing no fear in doing so, finding cracks in the defense. In the 7th round, Eleider caught his big break and never let the foot off the gas-pedal, knocking Kovalev down 3 times and ultimately out, taking his title in the process.
Alvarez has been an excellent fighter for a long time, despite just now winning his 1st world title at the age of 34, but he was heavily avoided for a half a decade when rendered as a mandatory challenger, so he stayed active by facing elite competition who hadn’t possessed a belt the time of their fights. Krusher has to come to the realization that the intimidation factor he once had will no longer aide him in the way it had earlier in his career, which was integral in his attack, making fighters reluctant to take any chances to capitalize on his many deficiencies, and him taking advantage of their hesitation.
He has a prime, confident Champion now standing in his way, and he needs to muster up a big time performance in hopes of getting his world title back. This fight will take place on the ESPN+ app.
