A NEW IBF LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION HAS TO BE CROWNED, WHO WILL IT BE?

By Tre Berry

Hard hitting Richard Commey (27-2-0, 24KO) of Ghana was originally to be slated as the mandatory challenger for standout Mikey Garcia, however Garcia decided to jump up to Welterweight to take a shot at Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr., vacating his belt while doing so.

What we now have in front of us is a vacant IBF belt, where Commey is the #1 contender, and Russian-born Isa Chaniev (13-1-0, 6KO) is the #3 seed, so with them being the two highest ranked contenders (there is no one at the #2 slot), they will meet up on February 2nd with aspirations of becoming a world Champion.

The winner of this IBF belt will be closely monitored, since unified P4P & Lightweight Kingpin Vasiliy ‘Hi-Tech’ Lomachenko is hellbent on becoming an Undisputed Lightweight Champion, and one of these guys will presumably have a world title-belt that he covets. This will be on the undercard of Alvarez/Kovalev II, to be shown live on ESPN+.
