‘ONE-TIME’ SURVIVES A SCARE TO DEFEND HIS TITLE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NEARLY TWO YEARS

By Tre Berry

WBA ‘Super’ Welterweight world Champion Keith ‘One-Time’ Thurman (29-0-0, 22KO), despite being out for an extended period of time appeared to be fresh, and had his timing and footwork down pat. He however ran into some real moments of turmoil in this bout (mainly his opponents doing), but had enough stones and guile to get him self through those moments to retain his title belt, beating rugged veteran Josesito Lopez (36-8-0, 19KO) via majority decision. Josesito didn’t spend much time cutting the ring off, and Thurman took advantage of it, circling, boxing, and picking his spots to counter up the middle and to the body. Thurman put Josesito down in the 2nd round with a check-left hook.

Josesito spent most of the fight on the hunt, and finally landed a sequence of power shots in significance that had the Champ in perhaps the most trouble he’s ever been in during his pro career in the 7th round, severely staggered, and weary, but as proven over time, Thurman is a tough bolt to break, and he was successful in getting through the round. The 8th round Josesito still had momentum, ripping shots through Thurman’s leaky defensive guard, but Keith started to gain his momentum back towards the end of the round. The last third of the fight, Keith showed that he was back in command, fighting in space, and countering, while Lopez gunned for it, trying to land the big blow to get him out of there. The judges ruled it a majority decision, with one judge scoring it 113 – 113, which wasn’t an accurate reflection of the bout that took place, however was overruled by more credible scores. Despite coming up short, Josesito did himself a favor with his performance, once again making his name a credible one for top ranking fighters to face. As for Keith, this was the type of bout that will get Thurman back in the groove, being that it didn’t come easy, but it forced him to dig deep to put forth what makes him who he is as a Champion.
