In what was the co-headline bout of the night, a surprise upset, of VERY questionable assessment by the judges, Tony ‘Super-Man’ Harrison (28 – 2 – 0, 21KO) is the new WBC Super-Welterweight Champion, as the judges all in dubious fashion awarded him the unanimous decision victory over Jermell ‘Iron-Man’ Charlo (31 – 1 – 0, 15KO).
Harrison to his credit, fought well, operating behind a measured, counter-punching approach and forcing Jermell into a thinking man’s fight, but Jermell was up for a chess match and matched him wits to wits, with both fighters in large operating from middle distance.
Jermell exhibited sharp mechanics with sound, high guard defense while he worked his way into his desired range to fire off counter shots, picking his spots here and there to throw the bombs, and he was more successful than Harrison in operating his gameplan throughout.
Harrison put up a valiant effort, most notably in the first 8 rounds, but that in no way should’ve been enough on the scorecards to warrant a Harrison win, especially considering it was Jermell who really pressed the action with effective aggression down the stretch, also putting together a thorough 12th to secure what should have been a victory in his favor. Below are the official judges names, with their scorecards…
ROBIN TAYLOR – 116 – 112 for Harrison
RON MCNAIR = 115 – 113 for Harrison
JULIE LEDERMAN = 115 – 113 for Harrison
