Undercard Watch: Sadam Ali vs Mauricio Herrera

Sadam Ali (26-2-0, 14KO) vs Mauricio Herrera (24-7-0, 7KO)

10 Round Weltwerweight Bout

Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City,  former WBO 154 pound champion Sadam Ali will return to the 147 pound division after being completely overpowered and stopped in 4 rounds by the much bigger and much stronger Jamie Munguia in May.

The 30 year old “World Kid”, will take on rugged ring veteran Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera in a 10 round welterweight bout on the undercard to Canelo Alvarez vs Rocky Fielding.

The 38 year old Herrera was last seen in action taking on the fan favorite all action fighter Jose Soto Karass in 2017. In that fight, Herrera took the 10 round majority decision over Soto Karass in California.

This weekend, the goal for Ali will be to look sharp in getting a win under his belt back at the welterweight division, one of the deepest in boxing right now.

“This is about re-affirmation, going back to 147 where he actually belongs, regaining solid footing and getting Sadam back on track. We all know how good he can be, and that 147 is his weight, and that he can properly represent himself, once again. He just needs to commit himself to it, and he’ll return to being one of those special fighters that people enjoy seeing.” Ali’s trainer Andre Rozier says.

While the task for Ali will be to remind fans of how good he can be at home at 147, Herrera is out to prove that at 38 and being put through numerous wars in the ring, he isn’t finished as a fighter, and that Ali will be in for a long days work when the bell rings.

Herrera knows that he is the underdog coming into this fight, he intends to bring the type of gutsy, gritty performance he is known for and what has become his edge when other fighters may have the overall better boxing skills and power, to pull the upset.
